The Flying Locksmiths

An emerging franchise needed custom software to scale.

The Challenge

What works for a handful of franchisees doesn’t work for hundreds. When the Flying Locksmiths came to Firefield, they were growing, but relying on 3rd party software for their core operations. Their software wasn’t built to scale and they had to implement workarounds just to manage day-to-day operations. It was time to invest in software that would help them scale and improve efficiency.

The Flying Locksmiths software needed to handle scheduling and dispatch, provide tools to technicians in the field, accept payments, and handle all invoicing and accounting via an integration with Quickbooks.

The Work

We began our discovery by diving into their existing software, data, and process. We discussed and analyzed how things currently worked, how things could work better, and got to know how they ran their operations.

We then began by mapping out user and data flows and then creating a robust set of wireframes to evaluate and discuss. While there are a lot of complexities to scheduling, inventory, permissions, and accounting, we tried to arrive at a system that was simple and intuitive. The planning of custom software also allowed the Flying Locksmiths to gain visibility into activities across all their franchises and give their franchisees tools they could not have considered before.

We then moved into development and built a Ruby on Rails application with a scalable infrastructure that would handle all the day to day operations of franchises and would allow for rapid onboarding of new franchises.

The Result

Flight Control, the Flying Locksmith’s new software, launched in September of 2017. We’ve worked with the Flying Locksmiths to move their existing franchises over to the new software, providing training and support as needed. We’ve also continued to work on expanding features and addressing new challenges when they arise.
